The Richmond and Northallerton MP Rishi Sunak has visited Wensleydale School in Leyburn to officially reopen its refurbished library and see first-hand the school’s specialist support for students with additional needs.

Mr Sunak was welcomed by headteacher Julia Polley, alongside head girl Magda Pleskacz and deputy head boy Charlie Wilkinson.

During the visit, he toured the revamped, student-led library before taking part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and leading a discussion with pupils about the importance of reading and developing strong literacy skills.

The MP was briefed by Mrs Polley on the school’s pioneering work in special educational needs (SEN), including its targeted mainstream provision (TMP) unit. The unit supports students with high-level communication and interaction challenges, helping them to fulfil their potential and, where possible, transition successfully into mainstream classes.

While visiting the TMP unit, Mr Sunak met staff and students and was also introduced to Roscoe, a spaniel therapy dog who plays a key role in supporting pupils’ wellbeing and engagement.

Discussions also covered the Government’s planned reforms to SEN provision, with a White Paper expected shortly. Mrs Polley highlighted the realities faced by smaller rural schools and the importance of ensuring national policy reflects those challenges.

Mr Sunak said he had been impressed by the school’s progress since his previous visit several years ago.

“The school had been struggling to attract students, but I am delighted to hear that it is now oversubscribed,” he said. “It is commendable that the school is focusing on fundamentals like reading, while also developing real expertise in special education. The TMP unit is helping to bridge the gap to mainstream schooling, and the work being done here is very impressive.”

Mrs Polley added: “Welcoming Mr Sunak back was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the inclusive, vibrant culture we have built. Reopening our library was a real highlight, and the visit has given both staff and students a real boost.”
