Former Prime Minister and Richmond and Northallerton MP Rishi Sunak has visited the site of Richmond Bike Park to see first-hand how a volunteer-led project is being transformed into a major new community facility.
During a tour of the site, Mr Sunak met members of the Richmond Bike Park Committee, Richmond Yorkshire CIC, volunteers and contractors involved in delivering the ambitious scheme.
The project was first proposed by local resident Louise Raine after she was inspired by a similar cycling facility elsewhere in Yorkshire. Since then, organisers have raised more than £250,000 through grants, fundraising events, donations and support from local businesses.
Construction work began in April, with volunteers helping prepare the site through a series of community dig days before specialist contractors moved in. Internationally recognised cycling facility builder Velosolutions is now leading the construction of the trails and pump track.
The development is being delivered in phases, with organisers hoping at least one trail will be ready for use later this year while work continues across the wider site.
During the visit, Mr Sunak heard how support has been secured from organisations including Sport England, National Highways and the National Lottery Awards for All scheme, alongside dozens of community fundraising initiatives.
Plans for the site also include a small café and a bike library, enabling people without their own bicycles to borrow equipment and enjoy the facilities.
Mr Sunak praised the commitment of those behind the project.
He said: “I have been very impressed with the determination of the people behind Richmond Bike Park. This is a project that has been driven by volunteers, supported by local businesses, and backed by the wider community.”
Louise Raine described the project as a “heartwarming journey” and said volunteers were delighted to welcome Mr Sunak and explain the benefits the bike park will bring to local people.
Organisers hope to hold a soft opening later this year, with an official launch planned for spring 2027.
