An insight into one family’s experience of the First World War will be shared during a special evening event at the Green Howards Museum in Richmond this June.
Remembering 2nd Lt Donald Simpson Bell will be presented by Robert Dransfield, the great-nephew of Donald Simpson Bell VC and grandson of Dorothy Bell.
The talk will explore the experiences of the Simpson Bell family before, during and after the First World War, using original letters, diary entries, photographs and family memories preserved over generations.
At the centre of the story is Dorothy Bell, who was still a teenager when her brothers went to fight in France. During the war she suffered the loss of her brother Donald at the Battle of the Somme, along with two cousins.
Her husband also experienced long-term health problems caused by gas exposure during the conflict, which later contributed to his early death.
Throughout her life, Dorothy carefully kept her brother’s memory alive, displaying his photograph and preserving the handwritten letters he sent home from the front line.
Mr Dransfield’s presentation will also examine the family’s life in Harrogate, including their home on East Parade, while displaying original documents offering a rare and intimate glimpse into wartime family life.
The event is based on his book, Memories from the River Stones, which tells the story of Annie and Smith Bell and their eight children, including Donald Simpson Bell, a member of the Green Howards who was awarded the Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery during the Battle of the Somme.
Donald is also remembered as the only English professional football player to be awarded the VC.
Illustrated by Roger Chapman of the Green Howards, the book will be available to purchase on the evening.
Tickets cost £15 per person and include a welcome drink and entry to the museum. Organisers are encouraging early booking due to expected demand.
The Green Howards Museum in Richmond is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 4.30pm, with last admission at 4pm.
