An internationally significant Iron Age discovery found in Richmondshire is set to go on public display for the first time this spring.

The Yorkshire Museum in York prepares to open a major new exhibition featuring the Melsonby Hoard.

From 15 May 2026, visitors will be able to see the remarkable collection following a successful fundraising campaign in 2025, which enabled the museum to acquire the hoard and secure its future in public ownership.

Discovered by a metal detectorist in 2021, the hoard has attracted global attention due to its unprecedented scale and importance.

Comprising more than 800 objects, it is the largest hoard of Iron Age metalwork ever found in the UK.

Items include chariot fittings and wheels, cauldrons, horse bridles, spears and other high-status objects, offering an extraordinary insight into life in late Iron Age Britain around 2,000 years ago.

The first-look exhibition will explore both the sheer scale and diversity of the find, as well as its wider archaeological significance.

Museum curators will examine what the Melsonby Hoard reveals – and challenges – about current understanding of Iron Age society, power and ritual in northern Britain.

Dr Andrew Woods, head of collections and research at York Museums Trust, said the exhibition represents a milestone moment for the museum.

“We are beyond excited to be able to put the Melsonby Hoard on display for the first time as a large-scale exhibition,” he said

“We are grateful to Durham University, Historic England and The British Museum for their support and guidance, as well as the overwhelming generosity shown during the fundraising campaign, which made it possible to acquire the hoard and share it with the public.”

The exhibition will run from 15 May 2026 until summer 2027 and will be accompanied by a programme of talks, events and workshops, with further details to be announced.
