New owner moves from Texas to Wensleydale to take on garage and shop

A Wensleydale petrol station and shop has a new owner.

Stephen Jack has moved from Houston, Texas, to take over Aysgarth Garage.

The 59-year-old engineer is originally from Sunderland, but in recent years has been working around the world converting ships into floating platforms for the oil and gas industry.

He wanted to run his own business and chose Wensleydale because his father was evacuated as child to West Witton during the Second World War, and the family would later come on holiday to the Dales.

Stephen said he was looking for a business he could expand and that had potential.

He said: “I’ve received a really warm welcome which I’m grateful for, and I’ve come to realise how important the shop is to the local community.”

The new owner said he would continue running the garage, MOT and van hire business, and he was looking to expand the services offered by restoring classic vehicles.

The staff are already working on his own classic 1958 TR3, which he shipped over from the US.

As well as improving the systems in the shop and fuel station, Stephen said he was looking to lower prices wherever possible.

He also plans to inquire if the filling station can benefit from the same Government fuel duty discount of 5p per litre received in Hawes.

Stephen, who has moved to Hunton, said he was relishing the challenge of the new business.

“For the first time in years I’m jumping out of bed in a morning and can’t wait to get started.”
