A small woodland in a Richmondshire village is to be extended with the help of a scheme which aims to plant around 500 new trees over the next few months.
The community project in Newton-le-Willows will see up to 100 saplings planted along a footpath which borders a woodland created several years ago.
It is benefitting from grant aid from the district councils Communitree project which has already seen around 300 new trees planted in eight parishes in the last year.
“This year we are hoping to plant a further 500 saplings but we can’t do it without the help of community groups,” said council spokesperson, Councillor Philip Wicks.
“We will look at all schemes including the planting of fruit trees and bushes, and projects around allotments.
“Newton le Willows has found the perfect location for all the community to benefit from the planting – it can improve health and well-being but also work to reduce noise, keep the air quality clean, improve the soil and support wildlife.”
Communities keen to get involved need to fill out an application form including:
- Identification of land in which the trees can be planted (the land must be accessible to the community and not private gardens)
- Indication as to how many trees may be planted
Other schemes being considered are at Scorton where 12 trees will be added to parks, Richmond where an orchard might be created at Lady Serena Park and in Finghall and Constable Burton.
