No charges to be brought after fatal Colburn collision investigation

No further action will be taken against two men who were in a military truck involved in a fatal collision that claimed the life of a pensioner, police have confirmed.

North Yorkshire Police said an extensive investigation had been completed into the death of John Robert Mitchell, 70, who died following a collision on the A6136 Catterick Road near Colburn Lane on June 11, 2025.

Mr Mitchell, who was travelling on a mobility scooter, suffered fatal injuries in the collision and died while being airlifted to hospital.

In an update on the case, a police spokesperson said: “An extensive collision investigation has been completed into the tragic death of Mr Mitchell.

“It concluded that no further action will be taken against the two men who were in the military truck. They have been released without charge.

“All parties have been updated, and the matter has been passed to the Coroner.”

Following the collision, officers appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage as part of a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The road remained closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene and specialist collision investigators carried out examinations.

Shortly after the incident, Mr Mitchell’s family paid tribute to him in a statement released through police.

They said: “John Mitchell: much loved husband, brother, uncle and godfather, will be sadly missed.”

With the investigation now complete, the case has been referred to the Coroner, who will determine the next steps and examine the circumstances surrounding Mr Mitchell’s death.
