One act play contest comes to Georgian Theatre

Amateur drama groups from across the region will be competing against each other in the first round of a prestigious national elimination contest for one-act plays.

Taking place over four evenings between April 11 to 14 at The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, the event is organised by the All England Theatre Festival and is one of the preliminary rounds of the one-act play competition for the Northern Area.

The contest will be in front of a public audience and adjudication will be provided by Ben Humphrey who is Associate Director at the Worcester Repertory Company and guest lecturer at the University of Worcester in Acting, Voice and Performance.

Audiences will be treated to a diverse range of productions, showcasing the very best of the region’s talent. Performers include: two groups from Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society (Blackadder 3: Sense and Senility by Richard Curtis & Ben Elton and The Proposal by Anton Chekhov); The Georgian Theatre Royal Youth Theatre (This is Yorkshire by Aimee Shields); Sedgefield Players (The Jewish Wife by Bertolt Brecht); and Allerton Players (The Dreaming by Richard James and Sweet Caroline Sweet by Tony Edwards.

Event organiser Warnock Kerr said: “This is an excellent opportunity for amateur drama groups to compete against their peers in a professional theatre setting and to benefit from expert adjudication and advice. If the standard from previous years is anything to go by, then we are in for an exciting contest!”

As well as the chance to go through to the next stage of the competition, the groups will be battling it out for a host of other awards to be presented during the Festival, including best overall production; best technical achievement and stage management; best single performance by an actor and actress in a principal role; best youth group and best overall production of the Festival as voted by the audience.

Winners of the Northern Area rounds will meet head-to-head at a semi-final held on 6 and 7 May at the Saltburn Community Centre, Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The England final takes place at the Mitchell Arts Centre, Hanley, Stoke on Trent on 2 June.
