There will be a rare treat for music lovers on Thursday night in St Oswald’s Church, Askrigg, when international organist and composer Philip Underwood travels from his home in Cheshire to give a free organ recital.
The programme includes many familiar and much-loved classics: Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor; Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, and Hornpipe from the Water Music; Elgar’s Nimrod; Bach’s Wachet auf (Sleepers Awake) and Haydn’s Eight Pieces for a Musical Clock. There will also be works by Brahms, Mendelssohn and Dubois.
Currently organist and director of music at St Bartholomew’s Church, Wilmslow, where he has established a monthly organ recital series, Philip has performed extensively throughout Britain and abroad and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. The recital on Thursday will start at 7.30pm and will last for just over an hour. Entry is free but donations for St Oswald’s Church restoration fund will be welcome.
