Photo mosaic of former pupil installed at Dales school

A photo mosaic of a Dales school’s former pupil has been installed at the primary.

The 4.5m artwork created by art and design studio the People’s Picture and lead artist Helen Marshall has been erected at Askrigg Primary School.

It features local resident David Hodgson when he attended the school in 1954 aged 7.

The image, Mosaic of Dales Youth, appeared at the The Story of Schools in the Upper Dales exhibition at Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes last year.

It was created using hundreds of photo tiles of youth and school-life in Upper Wensleydale, Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.

Several of Mr Hodsgon’s grandchildren attend the primary school and are pictured with the mosaic.

The exhibition marked the culmination of a project run by The NASH in Hawes, in partnership with the museum, and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund.
