Work by Pablo Picasso will be among the artwork on display at a new exhibition in Leyburn.
Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn will hold a second annual loan exhibition, Light and Shadow, following the success of last year’s 350 Years of British Art.
The exhibition brings together a diverse collection of paintings and sculptures from 50 BC to the 21st century, all notable for their arresting use of light and shadow.
The contrasting interplay between dark and light in art has produced some of the defining images of the history of Western visual culture, and this exhibition aims to explore how artists over a span of more than 2,000 years have employed this device to remarkable effect.
Working closely with public galleries and private collections, Tennants has curated a selection of more than 30 works of British and European art, ranging from ancient Roman busts to modern masters like Pablo Picasso, via 17th century Tenebrists, English history painters, Pre-Raphaelites, Impressionists, Expressionists, Modern British and more.
Artists represented include:
- Georges de La Tour (1593–1652)
- Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds (1630-1660)
- Edward Burne- Jones (1833-1898)
- Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)
- Joash Woodrow (1927-2006)
- Dame Laura Knight, RA, RWS (1877 – 1970)
