Plans for the demolition and redevelopment of an existing nursing home have been approved.

Members of North Yorkshire Council have given provisional approval for the redevelopment of Morris Grange Nursing Home, near Middleton Tyas, at a meeting yesterday.

The approval is subject to certain conditions that need to be agreed by the developers, including a restriction on a proposed cafe at the site only being used by residents and their visitors, and staff.

The scheme would see the existing building partially demolished and redeveloped to make a 36-bed care home and a new two-storey building consisting of 13 apartments for people needing care.

Plans for a 50-bed care home with 23 apartments were originally submitted in 2020, but the scheme was changed with plans for a small development submitted earlier this year.

Planning officers are recommending the new scheme is approved.

A report for councillors states: “The authorised use of the site is as a nursing home.

“It presently does not meet current care standards, with room sizes being sub-standard.

“The application proposed to re-use the existing building to provide a care home with 36 bedrooms and a new two-story building consisting of 13 apartments designed for individuals in need of care (9 single bed and 4 two-bed apartments).”

It is estimated the new home will create 36 jobs.

The report adds: “The new building would be visible in the landscape, but the design and materials finishes would ensure that its appearance would not be significantly harmful to the character and quality of this rural landscape, subject to being satisfied on the appropriateness of new materials for the detached care home apartment building.

“There would be no significant adverse impact on neighbour amenity or privacy as a result of the proposed development, and the access and parking arrangements would have no adverse impact on neighbour amenity or highway safety.”

Morris Grange Nursing Home closed in 2019.
