Plans for up to 30 new houses in Richmond submitted

A planning application for up to 30 new houses in Richmond has been submitted.

The application, from Zetland Estates, would see the housing development built on land off Hurgill Road.

The site previously housed a large stabling blocks, a menage and training ground, which was demolished around 20 years ago.

A report submitted with the plans states: “Zetland Estates Ltd are the land owner and developer in this instance; it
is very much a local development delivered by a local company.

“The proposals seek to create a small scale, low impact development of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes for the local area.

“There will be 30 homes in total, 6 of which are 100% affordable (capped) and 3 that are for the self build market, leaving 21 family homes on the open market.”

It adds: “This development is not an exercise in new build cramming like most large scale developers. This special site needs design that is considered and reflects the typography and setting – the scheme adopts a modern interpretation of traditional vernacular and is geared towards quality and distinctiveness.”

However, an online petition against the scheme has already attracted more than 200 signatures.

The petition states: “Proposals have been submitted for a densely populated, modern housing estate pushing up against the Coast to Coast path as it follows the edge of the medieval pastureland of Westfields – one of Richmond’s most popular and culturally significant open spaces.

“If built, the estate will create a scar that would be seen for miles around, including the top of the castle itself.”

Richmond Civic Society has also objected to the plans.

Its response to the council states: “We strongly object to this application as it is beyond the natural development limits of Richmond.

The very high density of the housing is also a huge over development of the site. Hurgill Road will not be able to cope with the large amount of additional traffic as there are already problems with traffic flow along the road.

“The visual impact from Westfields will be detrimental to the enormously attractive surrounding area.”

  1. Great plan. I’ve just moved back to the town and am looking for a decent detached house.

  2. Object to this development as where will it all stop..Richmond and surrounding areas are beautiful and we all need to keep it that way..My great grandfather (ex mayor of Richmond) Grandfather Grandmother and father are buried in Richmond cemetery and they would turn in their resting places if this was to go ahead..Richmond Council do your duty and OBJECT…

  3. … has anyone else had issues gaining access to the portal to lodge an objection to this development? if so, please comment.
