The sale of a disused plot will provide money to invest in their plant nursery business, say the applicants behind an application for 40 holiday lodges.
Ravensworth Nurseries have applied for change of use planning permission for lodges, a solar farm and a maintenance building on a site opposite their business on the edge of the village.
The development site includes former greenhouses, as well as surrounding land, which the company no longer uses after consolidating the business onto one side of the road.
Ravensworth director Fiona Dean said: “The retail side of the business was not running efficiently due to operating on both sides of the road
“The former retail area has been unused for three years. After moving the retail business into the main section of Ravensworth Nurseries, the company is making further retail development plans.
“The site was previously advertised for sale, which was unsuccessful and is now beginning to deteriorate.”
Fiona added: “The proposed change of use and planning application will provide funds for the company to invest in the main body of its existing business by upscaling its existing retail area and website, providing an online sales platform and generally produce a more modern and enjoyable retail experience, without losing our traditional nursery appeal.
“The plan will result in greater sales activities that will lead to increased employment opportunities as the business develops.”
