Police appeal after violence and sign theft in Richmond

Police have issued an appeal for information after an incident in Richmond early this morning.

Police were called to a violent incident in the Market Place at about 1am this morning.

A sign was later removed by a group of young men from the side of the former Holy Trinity Church, now the Green Howards Museum.

The theft was captured by local photographer Chris Collier and the photos have been passed to the police.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers were called to reports of violence on the Market Place in Richmond at approximately 1am on Wednesday, July 15.

“A group of males in their early 20s dispersed when officers arrived at the scene.

“Shortly after, a street sign was removed from the side of the Green Howards Museum.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Anyone with any information that can assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting reference number 12200120163.”

It is understood the sign has been recovered.
