North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said controlled burning in a skip spread to two other skips, industrial equipment and a shipping container.

Crews from Leyburn and Reeth extinguished the fire using breathing apparatus and hose reels after being called just before 8pm.

Police blocked the road in both directions with the route from Leyburn closed near the entrance to the recycling centre.

Richmondshire Police said in a post on social media: “Thanks to our colleagues in the fire service for their quick response extinguishing a large fire this evening.”
