Police say they are “frustrated” with the number of day-trippers coming to the Yorkshire Dales so far this weekend.

The force said Malham was busy with visitors on Saturday, while a man from West Yorkshire was given a fine after travelling to Bolton Abbey to “take photographs of the stars”.

Ahead of the weekend, North Yorkshire Police had urged people not to travel to and around the Dales to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.

A spokesperson for the force said last night: “Frustratingly today Malham was busy with day-trippers.

“We have increased patrols in the area, and will continue to engage, explain and encourage the public to do the right thing.

“Where needed, we will resort to enforcement to protect the public.”

The force added that at 10.30pm on Friday officers on patrol found a man from West Yorkshire in Bolton Abbey, who had travelled to take photographs of the stars.

He was issued with a fixed penalty notice.

“In the future, the vast majority of us will be able can look back at this period and feel pride at our collective response and our own individual behaviour and the sacrifices we have made to beat this virus,” a force spokesperson added. [kofi]
