Police investigate death of man in Leyburn

A pedestrian has died in a collision in Leyburn.

The man has been named locally as Carl Welburn, who lived in Leyburn and was in his 40s.

Carl was a well-known and popular figure in the town and numerous tributes have been paid to him online.

Police say they were called to reports of an incident on the A684 Harmby Road, near St Matthew’s Church, at 12.20am this morning.

The incident involved a white milk tanker and a pedestrian on the eastbound side of the road.

Sadly, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for several hours to allow police to carry out investigation work at the scene of the incident.

The road was reopened to the public just before 8am this morning.

Police say the tanker driver is assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the pedestrian, milk tanker and or any other vehicle travelling along Harmby Road between midnight and 12.20am to come forward.

Any witnesses with dash cam footage are asked to save the footage, and contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 select option 2 and ask for PC Nicola Gill.
