Police issue warning after blizzard conditions hit Yorkshire Dales

Police have urged motorists not to attempt to cross the moors in the Dales today due to blizzard conditions.

Several motorists have already got stuck and have had to be rescued.

Sgt Sharon Findlay, from Richmondshire police, said: “There are blizzard conditions on the tops and people are getting stuck even in 4x4s.

“Our officers have already had to rescue motorists who were stranded in their vehicles.

“We would urge anyone to avoid travelling over the tops today.”

Police say the Buttertubs, between Wensleydale and Swaledale, the road from Gayle over the tops to Langstrophdale are particularly bad.

Sleet and snow is forecast to fall for much of the today, particularly in the Upper Dales.

A weather warning for ice has also been issued.
