Police pledge to continue crackdown on dangerous parking near schools

Police say they will continue a crackdown on dangerous parking near schools in Richmondshire.

Local officers have issued dozens of fines and warnings to motorists parking illegally outside schools at drop-off and collection time in recent months.

Inspector Martin Metcalfe, from Richmondshire neighbourhood policing team, said: “As you know we have been targeting dangerous parking around our identified schools in Richmondshire and this week I am very pleased to say we are seeing a marked improvement around our schools, so the pupils are therefore much safer.

“It is a shame we have had to issue numerous fines and warnings recently to see this improvement, but I believe it had to be done.

“This week I have only issued two traffic offence reports, one in Richmond and one in Brompton on Swale, so although the situation is much better, there are clearly still some that are willing to risk a maximum fine of £1,000 or a vehicle seizure, if appropriate.”

Insp Metcalfe added: “We will therefore continue to patrol our identified schools and be proactive in relation to dangerous parking which puts our pupils at risk.

“All schools we have identified have been consulted and are backing our campaign to improve the safety of the pupils.

“If you are a local resident to a school and have parking issues at drop off times, please direct your concerns to the council via this link, as the Police will only deal with dangerous parking, such on on the yellow No Stopping Markings and on junctions etc.”
