Police praise drivers over festive drink drive campaign crackdown

Police have praised motorists after a Christmas crackdown on drink drivers results in just four arrests.

Officers carried out at least 115 breath tests in Richmondshire last month, with just four over the limit and many recording a zero result.

Inspector Martin Metcalfe, from Richmondshire neighbourhood policing team, said: “Obviously, four is four too many, but last year in North Yorkshire we carried out around 1,000 tests and that resulted in around 100 arrests, so around 10 per cent.

“Also, I believe no matter what we do, some people will always make the wrong choice as has been shown.

2I am therefore very happy with these results and would like to say a big thank you to all of you that made the right choice over the Christmas period.”

The highest reading of the month was 111mg, which is over three times more than the legal limit of 35mg.

Insp Metcalfe added: “The four are likely to receive lengthy driving bans, a large fine plus whatever else the magistrates deem appropriate, so it is clearly not worth the risk.

“Thankfully, I am not aware of any serious accidents as a result of these four inconsiderate drivers that simply made the wrong choice.”
