Police seize eight vehicles for traffic offences

Police said it was one of the worst tyres they had seen.

Police seized eight illegal vehicles in five hours on Friday

The vehicles were stopped in the Catterick, Colburn and Brompton-on-Swale area at static and mobile stop checks as part of a summer crackdown on drink and drug driving.

Inspector Martin Metcalfe, from Richmondshire neighbourhood policing team, said: “On Friday, your community policing team, with the assistance of our colleagues on the roads policing team and the Motor Insurance Bureau, set up various static stop checkpoints and carried out mobile checks assisted by technology in the Catterick, Colburn and Brompton on Swale area.

“The shocking results in just five hours included eight, yes eight, motor vehicles seized for no insurance and not having road tax. Bearing in mind over a year we average one to two a day, this is really quite shocking.

“There were nine traffic offence reports issued for a variety of offences, including no valid MOT, insecure loads and one of the worst illegal tyres I’ve ever seen.

“Two vehicles were also issued with prohibition notices meaning their journey ended there, as we believed they were simply too dangerous to travel around Richmondshire.

“Breath tests carried out when we had the power to do so, but thankfully no one was over the limit – and I am very grateful for that.”

Insp Martin added: “I firmly believe this sends out a very strong message that if you travel around Richmondshire and do not have the relevant documents for your vehicle, you are highly likely to lose it, so please do not risk it.

“Surprisingly, a third of people caught on Friday were Richmondshire residents.”
