The pilot involved in Wednesday’s light aircraft crash near Masham has died, police have confirmed.
North Yorkshire Police said the 22-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, passed away in hospital last night following the incident at Grewelthorpe.
His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Emergency services were called at 12.21pm on Wednesday after reports that a light aircraft had crashed within the grounds of the Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park, which was closed to the public at the time.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Wilkinson said: “Despite the best efforts of emergency service responders at the scene, and hospital staff, the pilot has tragically passed away.
“We are now conducting a joint investigation with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
“I continue to appeal to anyone who may have information or footage of the aircraft, which departed from Sherburn in Elmet near Selby, to come forward.”
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the aircraft prior to the crash, or who may have mobile phone or dashcam footage, not to share material on social media but to contact officers directly.
Anyone with information is asked to email matthew.wilkinson@northyorkshire.police.uk or call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and ask for Matthew Wilkinson.
