Postcards from Masham exhibition opens at Garden Rooms at Tennants

An exhibition of vintage photographic postcards offering a glimpse into Masham’s past will be on display at The Garden Rooms at Tennants from Tuesday, January 27 to Sunday, February 15.

Titled Postcards from Masham, the exhibition features 50 postcards on loan from local collector Clive Torrens. Predominantly dating from the Edwardian era, the postcards provide a fascinating insight into life in the market town around a century ago.

Many of the images were produced by Masham photographer G. Metcalfe and Leyburn photographer J. B. Smithson, capturing streets, buildings and scenes of everyday life from a bygone era.

Collecting postcards remains a long-established pastime, and Tennants regularly offers private collections for sale through its Stamps, Postcards and Postal History auctions. The next sale will take place on Thursday, May 1.

For ease of viewing, the postcards have been reproduced at a larger scale as part of the exhibition, allowing visitors to enjoy the historic detail on display.

This should be interesting even if 100 years ago Edward VII had been dead for 15 years.
