Preview of Friday night racing at Catterick Racecourse

Catterick Racecourse.

Friday nights are alright at Catterick Racecourse this week as the track hosts a competitive six-race card on the flat to round off the working week.

Racing gets underway at the track at 6.25 in the evening with a five-furlong maiden stakes contest before rounding off at 9.00 with another short-distance dash in class five.

A small field of four will head to the starting stalls for the opening race on Friday’s card (6.25) in the class five maiden stakes for two-year-old’s. Of the foursome, it should be a comfortable win for the Michael Dod’s trained Military Girl, second of 12 on debut last time out at Leicester, with her opposition’s form not looking up too clever in terms of competition.

Race two (6.55) sees double the number of runners of race one take to the track for the five-furlong handicap in class six for three-year-old’s. Dandy Fitz has started his career well for trainer Tim Easterby and can get off the mark here with his first win having finished a good second at Nottingham earlier this season and far from disgraced when fifth of nine at Redcar last time out.

The third race on the Catterick card (7.25) is another small field contest as five runners tackle the 1m5f trip in the class six handicap. Course and distance winner Lord Torranga should be bang in there once again having also finished third at Catterick last month on his last run. Sugarpiehoneybunch is another course winner but hasn’t won in 13 starts, though is off the same mark here as when previously successful at Catterick so has to enter calculations.

Seantrabh is down in grade and looks the one to beat in the class four handicap over five furlongs in race four (7.55), having raced at Catterick just once before and that was a victory back in 2022. Of the rivals, Albegone rates as the main danger off the back of an encouraging return to action this season when fourth of six in a Wetherby handicap last month – and is also a previous course and distance winner.

Seven runners will head to the stalls for the penultimate race on Catterick’s Friday card for the restricted maiden stakes in class five over the five-furlong distance (8.25). Hachiko for trainer Richard Fahey is worth chancing on debut in what looks a weak contest, a half-sister to several winners over seven furlongs. On form, Obligatory has the best of the remainder of the field and was a runner-up at Catterick last month before a hampered run at Haydock last week.

Friday’s card comes to a close at 9.00 with a class five handicap over the five-furlong sprint distance and nine runners are set to head to the start. The consistent Wreck It Ryley was a very fine second in much better company than this at Haydock earlier this month and holds very strong claims to get the win at Catterick. Mister Sox for the Easterby team should be there or thereabouts as well, a previous course winner who has been nudged up in the weights just 1lb for a decent second in a Beverley handicap last time out.
