A village pub’s bid to extend its licence will be decided at a public hearing after a single villager objected saying the venue had ruined their retirement.
Punch Taverns has applied to North Yorkshire Council to vary the premises licence for the Crown Inn, in Brompton-on-Swale.
Permission is sought for the pub to stay open every day until 1am, with 2am opening allowed on Bank Holidays, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
Alcohol could be served until half an hour before closing.
Live and recorded music would be able to continue indoors until 12.30am and outdoors until 11pm.
Indoor live and recorded music would be required to be turned off by 11pm.
As part of the application, the pub is also asking to update various conditions following discussions with North Yorkshire Police and the council’s environmental health team.
The resident, whose name has been redacted from council papers, lives near the pub.
The villager says the pub regularly hosts live bands, DJs, karaoke, bingo, quiz nights and televised sporting events, creating excessive noise that can be heard throughout their home.
They claim drinkers often remain outdoors until after 1am and have raised concerns about a quoits pitch being turned into a beer garden.
They say they have repeatedly reported the issues to the council and police.
Describing the village as “largely a retirement community, they added: “Living opposite this pub has ruined my retirement. I am ill with stress and cannot sleep most weekend nights until after 2am with the noise and anger. During the week I can eventually get to sleep after the bingo, karaoke, quiz or sports have finished.
“If you give this pub seven days a week until 1am, 2am on holiday weekends, and even more outdoor seating, you may as well board up my house. I won’t be able to live in it, I won’t be able to sell it.”
The resident said that one occasion they were interviewed under caution by police after being accused of “destroying” the pub door when they banged on the door due to the noise coming from the pub.
The resident said police did not take any further action.
The authority’s statutory licensing sub-committee on Thursday, August 6 to discuss the application.

Surely this is a case of give and take.The publican is granted a licence to be in business and, should respect that his/her business should in no way affect the lives of his/her neighbours. If it does, then he/she does not respect this principle and should not have the licence extended.
How to ruin a village!
This is a village pub and it should observe the village location. 11pm is a reasonable time to close the pub.
If drinker’s can’t get enough to drink by that time then something is wrong.
This is not a town location so why such late opening times?
