RADS rehearsing for next production, Whisky Galore

Rehearsals for Whisky Galore.

Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society is gearing up for its autumn production — a version of the classic novel and film Whisky Galore.

In a nod to the all-female travelling player groups of the 1950s, Philip Goulding’s adaptation of Compton McKenzie’s classic brings us the fictional all-female Pallas Players as they put on their version of Whisky Galore.

Director Mike Walker said: “Whisky Galore combines rollicking physical theatre, panto and farce, and Goulding’s re-working of the novel retains its absurdity and joyful sense of mischief, whilst restoring some of the elements missing from the film such as the conflict between Catholics and Calvinists, frustrating the attempts to plan two different weddings against family intervention.”

The classic tale based on a true story tells how on a remote Scottish island hampered by Second World War rationing, a shortage of whisky is brought to an end by a marooned cargo ship carrying 50,000 cases of the finest bottles.

It is brought to life by a cast of seven ladies playing 25 different male and female characters, each with their own charm, comedy, quick changing costumes and a hilarious array of accents.

“The islanders are running out of booze when magically, a ship full of whisky destined for America is wrecked on their doorstep; cue a game of cat and mouse with the authorities and the fun begins, involving much hiding of whisky from the Home Guard and Customs employees.

“If our audience laughs half as much as the cast have during rehearsals, they may need a ‘wee dram’ to recover after the show.”

Whisky Galore performs at The Georgian Theatre Royal on Thursday 9th – Saturday 11th November 2023.

There are tickets still available via the website booking system www.georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk or via the box office on 01748 825252, but these have been going fast so advance booking is recommended.
