A special evening celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway will take place in Leyburn next week.
Leyburn Arts and Community Centre will host Railway Jubilation on Thursday, September 17, featuring a film and illustrated talk examining the pioneering Stockton and Darlington Railway.
The evening will include a screening of The First Five Miles: a Stockton and Darlington Railway story, starring Stephen Tompkinson as railway engineer George Stephenson and Michael Hodgson as businessman Edward Pease.
The film tells the lesser-known story of the initial five-mile journey from Witton Park to Shildon as part of the celebrations marking the railway’s bicentenary.
Before the screening, Northern Echo features editor Chris Lloyd will give an illustrated talk about the historic 26-mile journey between Shildon and Stockton, via Darlington, on September 27, 1825.
The opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway went on to transform the way people and goods travelled and helped pave the way for the development of railways around the world.
Railway Jubilation will take place at Leyburn Arts and Community Centre, Richmond Road, Leyburn, starting at 7pm.
Tickets cost £8, which includes complimentary cake during the interval.
Bookings can be made through Leyburn Arts and Community Centre’s website or by calling 01969 624510.
