Residents agree deal to buy Skeeby pub

The local community has agreed a deal to buy the Travellers Rest pub in Skeeby.

Members of the Skeeby Community Pub Society (SCPS) told a public meeting last night an agreement had been reached with the owner of the premises, businessman Jon Whitfield.

SCPS chair Carol Wilkinson said the deal was “amazing news”.

“The many hundreds, or even thousands of man hours, that have been put in to saving our wonderful old pub have been worth every second, and we are especially grateful to those who kept the dream alive over the past 12 years.

“The support we have received throughout our campaign has been truly amazing, and thanks especially for the advice and guidance from Richmondshire District Council, The Plunkett Foundation and the hundreds of steadfast supporters.

“We hope that we can once more enjoy the pleasure of each other’s company at the Travellers Rest — a community pub.”

SCPS has now stepped up its fundraising campaign to pay for the purchase and restoration of the building.

The group is selling community shares in the building.

Carol added: “In order to buy The Travellers Rest and transform it into a thriving, viable, sustainable village pub, we need to raise around £275,000 from share purchases to fully finance the project.”

The group has already revealed that more than £160,000 has been pledged towards the goal, with more than 100 investors coming forward since the appeal was launched in September.
