Residents urged to give views on BT phone box removal plans

The phone box in Thwaite is one that is at risk.

Residents are being urged to give their views on plans to remove 42 public pay phones in Richmondshire.

The district council is asking for community opinions on BT’s plans to get rid of boxes that they say are underused.

It is just nine months since the authority objected to the removal of these boxes – and had the support of local residents and community groups.

They feared that with erratic mobile phone coverage, holiday homes without landlines and poor winter weather removing the boxes would leave many of the areas vulnerable in emergencies.

Residents have until September 28 to reply to the council’s consultation.

The responses will then be collated and sent to BT along with the views of district councillors following a full council meeting in October.

One of the options given to local parishes by BT is to adopt a kiosk and use it for other purposes, such as a library or home for a community defibrillator.

You can do so by completing the short survey here.

All responses will be collated and forwarded to BT before the deadline o0f September 28.

Alternatively, comments can be forwarded to the district council’s business and community officer, Chloe Lewis, via email at chloe.lewis@richmondshire.gov.uk
