Castle Hill Bookshop in Richmond has been presented with the David Doorbar Award for Inspiring Innovation and Excellence in Retail.

David Doorbar was a well-respected Richmond businessman, who with his wife Faye, ran Richmond Motor Company, the successful Nissan dealership in Dundas Street.

Following the sale of the garage, David became involved in community activities and was management board member for the Leader fund, director and chairman of Just the Job Enterprise Charity and a director at Yorkshire Business Aid.

David believed passionately that there were wonderful opportunities to develop Richmond into one of the most vibrant town centres in England, with an enthusiastic and successful retail sector at its heart.

David died in 2015 at the age of 60. Wishing to recognise the great contribution he had made to local business, the Richmond and Lower Swaledale Business Association created an annual award in his honour.

Because of his desire to encourage growth and innovation, David requested that the award should be presented each year to the Richmond business which showed Inspiring Innovation and Excellence in Retail.

The 2016 award has been presented to Castle Hill Bookshop by Faye Doorbar, who said of the staff: “The whole team have long been an exceptional example of how to look after your customer, to retain them and to become a truly valued service for the whole community.”

She added: “That they have weathered the storm of rapidly changing developments in technology particularly affecting their sector is admirable and testament to what David always believed, that people like to buy from people and if you make it a pleasurable, efficient and outstanding experience, customers will always return.”

Wendy Patch, who has worked at Castle Hill Bookshop for 28 years, believes the key to the shop’s survival has been the knowledge and passion for books that she and her colleagues, Liz, Angie and Carol, enjoy.

She said: “It has been a pleasure to share that passion with customers over the years. Receiving the David Doorbar award is a much appreciated recognition of our desire to give excellent customer service to local people and visitors to Richmond.”

The David Doorbar Award, Inspiring Innovation and Excellence in Retail, is awarded annually in David’s name by the Richmond and Lower Swaledale Business Association, which works on behalf of businesses in Richmond and the surrounding area.

Any business people who would like to learn more about the association are invited to email the new chairman Marcia McLuckie at  or call 01748 825525.
