Richmond Chamber Orchestra to perform first Wensleydale concert

Richmond Chamber Orchestra rehearse in Grinton Church.

Richmond Chamber Orchestra (RCO), fresh from their sell-out concert in the Georgian Theatre Royal, is travelling to Wensleydale for the first time on Sunday, July 13.

Playing in Aysgarth Church, organisers of the event say they will bring a relaxing and mainly romantic programme fit for a summer’s afternoon. And there’s a mystery piece.

RCO artistic director Alastair McLachlan said there would also be a “mystery piece”.

“All I can tell you is that it’s breathtakingly beautiful, a piano is involved, and that everyone, but everyone, will adore it whether or not they’ve heard it before.

“We love to play less familiar music as well as the occasional Classic FM standard — this time you’ll be wondering which tune to hum on the way home.

“There is Elgar’s grand Introduction & Allegro, with a beautiful Welsh folk tune at its heart; Bach’s E major Concerto, which director Philippa Mo’s describes as ‘one of my all-time favourite pieces’, and Janacek’s charming Idyll Suite.

“Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile for cello was so popular that he had to arrange for string orchestra, and Percy Grainger’s Molly on the Shore is a rollicking arrangement of two  Irish folk tunes.”

The RCO players come from across the region.

Director Philippa Mo recently appeared in The Lost Music of Auschwitz on Sky Arts and also in London’s Bloomsbury Theatre.

The RCO plays in Aysgarth Church DL8 3SR on Sunday, July 13 at 3pm.
