Richmond cyclist to help raise £60,000 with expedition across Italy

An amateur cyclist is preparing to cycle across Italy to raise money for a charity which has supported her close friends and family.

Gillian Tulip-Gales, from Richmond, is embarking on the week-long expedition with nine of her work colleagues in a bid to raise £60,000 for Dementia UK.

The gruelling six-day mission, organised by her employer The Danesmoor Group in Newton Aycliffe, is part of an initiative to raise as much money as possible for the specialist dementia nurse charity.

Gillian said: “With over one million people across the UK expected to have a diagnosis of dementia by 2025, this heart-breaking disease has no cure, but it can be managed by the fantastic work of Admiral nurses – healthcare professionals that are specifically trained to work directly with families and those impacted with all forms of dementia, every single day of the week.

“I’m not a natural cyclist and Lycra is certainly not my thing. neither is helmet hair, but I’m willing to put in as much training as will be required to give it my best shot.”

The ride, which takes place in May, will see Gillian cycle over 360km of cross-country Italian terrain, from Rimini to Pisa.
