Members of the ladies’ section at Richmond Golf Club celebrated International Women’s Day with a special competition held in bright spring sunshine.
The event took place on Saturday, March 7, when players gathered for a fun nine-hole Tex Mex competition designed to bring together both experienced golfers and those newer to the sport.
Lady captain Claire Bateman said the event was intended to give newer players the chance to develop their skills while enjoying a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
She said: “We held a fun nine-hole Tex Mex competition which gave the opportunity for new lady golfers to hone their skills supported by more experienced players.”
The day concluded with plenty of conversation and laughter, along with a celebratory glass of prosecco. A short speech about the benefits and opportunities within women’s golf was also delivered by the club’s Women in Golf lead, Barbara Gregory.
The winning team on the day was Lynda Thorpe, Mel Albrighton, Elizabeth Downes and Fiona Gill.
Second place went to Claire Bateman, Janet Probert, Jane Clark and Claire White, while Eileen Catt, Cherry Mains, Amanda Pierson and Lynn Nowicki finished third.
In the individual prizes, Sarah Calvert won nearest the pin on the fourth hole, while Mary Ann Hide claimed nearest the pin on the ninth.
The club is continuing its efforts to encourage more women to take up the sport and will host a ladies’ taster day on Saturday, March 28, from 2pm to 4pm.
