Richmond Town Over 40s are celebrating their first silverware in nine years after winning the Sunderland and District League Division Two Ironside Cup.
The team secured the trophy last Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Redcar Newmarket at Newton Aycliffe Sports Club.
The triumph completed a remarkable cup run for Richmond, who only two weeks earlier staged a dramatic comeback in the semi-final.
Trailing by three goals with 20 minutes remaining, Town fought back to level the match before winning on penalties thanks to a save from goalkeeper Tony Lansdell and successful spot-kicks from all five Richmond takers.
The final presented another major challenge, with Redcar having beaten Richmond in both league meetings this season, including a 5-0 victory in February.
But on a sunny morning in Newton Aycliffe, Richmond produced one of their best performances of the campaign in front of Sunderland and District League secretary Ally Wilson.
The Sunderland and District League, which features five divisions, is regarded as one of the largest and best-run veterans competitions in the country, with Richmond the southernmost club involved.
Town started the final at a relentless pace, combining composed passing football with aggressive pressing and strong individual performances across the pitch.
Their dominance saw them race into a four-goal lead before half-time, effectively ending the contest before the interval.
Player-manager Chris Lax opened the scoring, while recent recruits Sam Bainbridge and man of the match Mitch Cameron impressed in midfield, with Bainbridge netting once and Cameron scoring twice.
Gary Walker also played a key role throughout the match, causing constant problems for the Redcar defence.
Richmond remained disciplined in the second half and continued to create chances before eventually sealing a memorable 4-1 victory.
Players, supporters and mascots later celebrated long into the evening back in Richmond.
The club plays its home fixtures at Earls Orchard on Saturday mornings with 10.30am kick-offs.
Richmond’s final home game of the season takes place on Saturday, May 9, against Wingate, with supporters invited to attend.
