Richmond Town Reserves beat Catterick Garrison to narrow gap at top

Wins for Richmond Town Reserves and Unicorn at the weekend mean the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League title race remains wide open.

Town’s game over Catterick Garrison was switched to Earls Orchard due to a waterlogged pitch up the road.

Catterick had a depleted squad but were still hopeful of getting a result.

Damian Hargreaves managed to hook the ball off the Garrison line in the 11th minute, but Richmond recycled the ball and Matty Turnbull’s shot skidded into the corner past the helpless Catterick keeper Mark Birnie.

Catterick improved after the interval but Richmond hit them on the break with Luke Pearson’s weaving run ending with a tidy finish from Chris Hope after Birdie had initially saved well low down.

Garrison started to enjoy more of the ball and a stunning 30-yard strike from Damian Hargreaves into the top left corner reduced the deficit.

However, Hope maintained the two-goal cushion for Richmond when he was first to react and lifted the ball over a defender and keeper to make it 3-1.

Second half Catterick sub Jake Oakes was unlucky to see his fine shot canon off the bar when he was introduced, and then repeat the trick moments later from another corner.

Richmond burst clear and Nathan Simpson was on hand to make it 4-1.

Catterick pulled a goal back when Jez Mortimer finished a Neil Wright cutback but Richmond held on to move to second in the table just two points behind the visitors.

Last season’s winners Unicorn also remain in the hunt after a 4-2 win over Carperby.

Two goals from Stephen Butterworth, who recently joined from Bedale, one from Adam Lambert and an early own goal gave Unicorn a 4-0 lead at half time.

Carperby improved after the break and two goals from Tim Weatherill reduced the gap, but it was too little too late and

Unicorn are now just four points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

In the remaining fixture, Askrigg and Spennithorne played out a 1-1 draw, teenager Ben Alderson scoring late on to level after Spenni had taken the lead through Ellis Wing.
