A Richmond woman who struggles to walk because she has motor neurone disease (MND) is preparing to cycle more than 150 miles for charity.

Cath Muir in tandem with her sister Ruth Thompson will be cycling from Workington in Cumbria to Whitby to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Cath was diagnosed with MND just over three years ago and since then has tried to keep life as normal as possible.

This story continues after the adverts:

She struggles to walk now but has started a cooking business from home where most of it can be done sitting down.

She volunteers for two different organisations, trying to keep herself as active as possible.

Over the last three years between her family and friends Cath has raised in excess of £24,000 for causes related to MND, wanting to give back the great help she received from these organisations.

Cath said: “I am hoping to raise a lot of money for MNDA with a percentage of it going to the Cleveland and Hambleton and Richmondshire Groups.

“Fortunately I have a very fit sister who is going to be amazing support on this latest challenge.

“If she needs to get off and push up a hill she has me and the bike to push.

“Once I am lifted on the bike I can’t get off myself all I can do is sit and pedal as hard as I possibly can to help.

“My husband is the back-up team in the car following slowly behind us.

“So please look out for us over the weekend and donate as much as you can for this amazing charity who tries to do what they can for people who have this horrendous disease.”

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a fatal rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, attacking the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work.

It kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis.

It’s a devastating disease that affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time and kills six people every day. There is no cure.

The MND Association is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on MND care, research and campaigning.

Denise Davies, head of community fundraising at the MND Association, said: “Without the amazing support of people like Cath the MND Association simply would not be able to provide it’s vital support services, fund research to find a cure and campaign and raise awareness of MND.

“Together we are making a real difference for people affected by this devastating disease.”
