Richmondshire Choral Society resumes rehearsals

Richmondshire Choral Society members are looking forward to restarting rehearsals tonight.

They will be meeting in St Joseph and Francis-Xavier RC Church in Newbiggin, Richmond, rather than Richmond Methodist Church as previously stated.

The choir would be delighted to have new members join this term.

Leaders said there is an exciting programme planned for its concert on November 19.

This will be part of the Richmond Castle 950th celebrations and comprises three works by well-known English composers of the twentieth into the twenty-first centuries, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gerald Finzi and John Rutter.

Additionally, there will be a composition commissioned by the 950th committee and the choir and sponsored by Richmondshire District Council.

The music is by local composer Mark Harrison whose cantata Jubilate Natale received a standing ovation at the choir’s 2017 Christmas concert.

It sets words by Mary Branigan which celebrate the town and its people.

Anyone interested in joining Richmondshire Choral Society is welcome to come to rehearsals to arrive from 7pm to sing at 7.30pm.

All music is provided and there are no auditions to join.

In spring 2022 RCS will be joined by Reeth based Swale Singers to open the 50th Swaledale Festival with a performance of Handel’s Messiah in Ripon Cathedral.

Conductor Peter Stallworthy said: “We have an exciting year ahead of us with the concert celebrating the Richmond 950 year anniversary and the Swaledale Festival performance of Messiah.

“I’m optimistic that this season will give the choir a real shot in the arm and a fresh sense of impetus as we move forwards together.”
