Richmondshire communities urged to join litter picking campaign

Members of the is Sustainable Swaledale group litter picking last year.

Richmondshire communities are being urged to join a mass clean up of the district next month.

The district council is supporting the Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British September Clean campaign by offering local groups litter picking kits – grabbers, sacks and fluorescent jackets can be borrowed.

The authority will also pick up all collected litter.

The campaign replaces the annual spring clean organised by the national group – cancelled due to the pandemic.

Organisers have warned that next month’s event must be done with restrictions and social distancing measures in mind.

One local group that is supporting the campaign is Sustainable Swaledale – their volunteers will be out and about in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.

It is taking small but positive steps to make sure our world is a sustainable one – including litter picking or tree planting, its ‘Incredible Edible’ community garden plots and supporting local campaigns.

Its Big September litter pick is on Saturday September 19th at 10am, with meeting points at Reeth and Gunnerside.
