The new project aimed at Armed Forces families in Darlington, will be open to referrals from November 2018 onwards and any family who wants to find out more can get in touch with Home-Start Richmondshire.

The project also needs friendly and family focused volunteers who are willing to offer two to three hours each week to visit and support a local family living in the Darlington area.

Volunteer opportunities area also available in Richmondshire.

A new volunteer training course is planned for January 2019.

Supported by the Chancellor using LIBOR funds for the next two years through a grant award of £65,000, this project will work closely with armed forces families to tailor support to meet individual family needs.

Home-Start Richmondshire offers a confidential and friendly support service which can provide relief and companionship for parents who are feeling isolated, lonely and would benefit from adult company during a child-busy child week.

Support can be practical and emotional – volunteers will help with anything reasonable. This can mean listening to troubles over a cup of tea, playing with the children while the parent gets jobs done in the house like washing or tidying, getting out and about to local activities or play parks and signposting to local support agencies and accompanying to appointments.

Andrea Hobbs, scheme coordinator, said: “Being a volunteer for Home-Start is a special experience and there is a great feeling of belonging to something that matters.

“As a charity we can offer support that is unique to the families own situation and we are so lucky to have been given this funding to help us reach more armed forces families than ever.

“The only thing we can’t do is look after children when the parents are not present – but volunteers will help out in all sorts of ways that really makes a difference to the day to day task of managing a family.”
