Richmondshire go through to the next round of the National Club Cup

A rain-soaked Saturday gave way to a memorable Sunday as Richmondshire’s first XI came through a nervy ECB National Club Championship tie at Pudsey St Lawrence.

While the third XI underlined the depth of talent at the club with a dominant 131-run victory at Normanby Hall. The second XI had already set the tone on Saturday with a commanding eight-wicket win at Hurgill Road.

1st XI — ECB National Club Championship, Group 2 Round 1

Richmondshire CC 130/6 (30.4 ov) beat Pudsey St Lawrence CC 128 all out (28 ov) by 4 wickets

It was a hard-earned but thoroughly deserved victory for Dan Hodgson’s side as Richmondshire navigated a testing cup chase to progress in the ECB National Club Championship.

Pudsey St Lawrence, who won the toss and elected to bat, were bowled out for 128 in 28 overs in what proved a fine collective bowling performance. The Pudsey openers had made a confident start putting on 24 in the first three overs.

Max Percival (1-27) then made the first breakthrough and two more wickets to Josh Dowson (2-27) quickly followed, making the score 33 for three. A fourth wicket partnership of 54 made the score looking more challenging but the innings then quickly collapsed

Shafi was the standout, tearing through the lower order to finish with 3 for 9 from four devastating overs. Sam Wood provided excellent support throughout with 3 for 25 from eight overs and Lalith Akkaraju (1-23) kept the pressure on from the other end.

The chase was far from straightforward. Michael Layfield fell for 4, Gary Pratt followed for 11in the same over. When Shafi departed for 2 Richmondshire found themselves in a spot of bother at 46 for 3. Owen Kelly and Sam Wood provided support while Dan Hodgson was making runs.

Throughout captain Dan Hodgson used all his experience to anchor the innings. The Percival brothers undaunted by the occasion put bat to ball. Max Percival made a brisk 15 before being dismissed with the score at 115 for 6.

With 15 still required this brought in brother Jake Percival to provide the finishing flourish with 15 not out. Dan Hodgson finishing unbeaten on 36 from 61 balls.

AROUND THE CLUB

1st XI — NYSD ECB Premier Division — No Result

Saturday’s Premier Division trip to Stockton CC was abandoned without play, both sides sharing six points from the washout. With no Premier League games played the league positions are unchanged.

 

2nd XI — Richmondshire CC 171/2 (37 overs) beat Guisborough CC 167/8 (42 overs) by 8 wickets

The second XI provided Saturday’s standout performance, chasing down Guisborough CC’s 167 for 8 with eight wickets and five overs to spare.

Shaun Charlton led the bowling with 4 for 49, well supported by Joe White’s 3 for 53 from 12 overs. Brett Roberts top-scored for Guisborough with an unbeaten 62, but the total always looked short.

In reply, Joe White again impressed with the bat, contributing 52 before Raam Raj (54*) and captain Sam Winter (52*) sealed a comfortable victory.

 

3rd XI — Richmondshire CC 196/8 (40 overs) beat Normanby Hall CC 65 all out (22.4 overs) by 131 runs

The third XI rounded off a superb weekend for the club with a crushing 131-run victory at Normanby Hall. Captain Isaac Bottomley was the driving force with the bat, striking 74 from 64 balls including nine fours, with John Clark (43) and Louis Morris (29*) providing solid contributions around him as Richmondshire posted a commanding 196 for 8 from their 40 overs.

Normanby Hall’s reply never got going. Lewis Pybus was outstanding with the ball, claiming 3 for 10 from six miserly overs including four maidens, while Andy Dade (2-4) and Harry Saunders (2-21) chipped in to bundle the home side out for just 65 inside 23 overs.

 

4th XI were progressing well at Thornaby CC, reaching 81 for 4 from 26 overs, before rain ended play with no result. The 5th XI’s home fixture against Haughton CC was cancelled without a ball bowled.
