Richmondshire record first win of season

Richmondshire 1sts recorded their first win of the season with a nine wicket victory over Thornaby.

Having won the toss Thornaby elected to bat and made a fast start in the first couple of overs before Josh Dowson pinned them back with a couple of wickets. The second of these being the valuable wicket of pro Husnain Bakhari.

Thornaby made something of a recovery to go onto 49 before Josh claimed his third wicket to finish with figures of three for 28. The first bowling change saw Sam Wood join the attack to take four for 30.

Despite only having flown in from Australia on Friday, new recruit Connor Blaxall-Hill took three for 28 with his off-spin to see Thornaby all out for 124 in 32.3 overs.

With only a modest run rate required Richmondshire openers Bob Carr and Gary Pratt progressed patiently and were only 20 runs short of the Thornaby total when Carr was out for 42. Mike Layfield then joined Pratt, who completed his half century with 54 to seal the victory.

The 2nds week started well with a victory in the Robinson cup at Barnard Castle. Batting first they made 134 for 7 in their 20 overs, with Joe Shields making 42. Barnard Castle were then dismissed for 85. Shaun Charlton taking three for 11, Tom Stockton three for 8.

They faced a much stiffer task on Saturday when the played newly relegated Marton, who have retained a strong line up despite their relegation.  Having been put into bat Marton piled on the runs before declaring with a total of 319 for two. There was never any likely hood of Richmondshire reaching this total and they were all out for 125.

The 4th team played Yarm 1sts and came out with a three-wicket victory. Put into bat Yarm were restricted to 87 all out with Gaz Wood taking four for 29 and Max Percival two for 20. Richmondshire’s batsmen also struggled and it was the experience of veterans Andy Dade (26) and Andy Percival (13) that saw them home.

The 5ths travelled to Witton-le-Wear with their usual mix of veterans and juniors. Witton-le- Wear were put into bat and dismissed for 107 in 20 overs. Juniors James Cox (three for 31) and Ram Raj (one for 13) taking wickets along with Vittal Raj who took three for 15. Raam (23) and James (20) then topped the scorers as Richmondshire put on 108 for six to win.

The 3rds have yet to complete a game as yet another game fell victim to the weather at Wolviston.

In the Junior section the Under 15s had a convincing win over Harrogate in the ECB National T20. Batting first they finished on 192-4. With Joe White scoring 53 not out of 26 balls ( 8-4s and 1-6 ), Max Percival 49 off 16 balls ( 5-4s and 4-6s ) and Raam Raj with 30 off 30 balls ( 3-4s ).

The Harrogate batsmen were no match for Richmondshire’s bowlers and were all out for 76. All the Richmondshire team being given a bowl, Richmondshire will play Guisley at home in the next round.

There were also wins for the Under 13s at Stillington, the Under 12s at Sedgefield and the Under 11 Raiders at Thornton Watlass.
