Richmondshire responds to Ukraine refugee appeal

Donations have flooded in after an appeal was issued to help refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The appeal is being coordinated from Colburn Village Hall.

Donations from across Richmondshire and beyond have been arriving at the hal all week.

It is hoped six vans full of items needed by refugees will leave Colburn for Poland on Tuesday.

As well as boxes of items, volunteers from across Richmondshire have arrived at the hall to hell.

Cllr Angie Dale is helping coordinate the appeal.

She said: “This is about our community coming together for those in need.

“The response has been amazing.

“There’s been lots of tears this morning when people have been bringing things in – it’s been very emotional.”

As well asking for donations of warm clothes, food, toiletries and medicine, Cllr Dale is asking for money to pay for fuel for the vans.

Cllr Dale said they had worked out that they needed enough money for 30 tanks of fuel to get six vans to Poland.

So far, they had received donations for ten tanks.

Cllr Dale said they now had enough clothing but were asking for donations of bottled water.
