Richmondshire slimmers raise money to help beat cancer

Slimmers from across Richmondshire have helped to Walk All Over Cancer at a charity event in Bedale.

Members of Slimming World groups from the district gathered at the sports club for the walk last Sunday, which raised money for Cancer Relief.

Together the slimmers raised more than £730.

They were joined by Bedale mayor Andy Hallett.

The event aims to raise awareness of the links between keeping a healthy weight and reducing the risk of cancer.

Member Maureen Mathews, from the Richmond Group, has lost more than two-and-a-half stone since joining the group.

Maureen completed the event even though she says she “couldn’t run for a bus’s before losing weight”.

She said: “Before losing weight anything remotely active was my idea of a nightmare. My husband drove me everywhere I needed to go, and I made excuses if anyone planned anything I might need to wear trainers for.

“As the weight dropped off my confidence rocketed. From the very first night at Slimming World I was welcomed so warmly and instantly made to feel part of the group.

“We are all there for the same reason – to lose weight and to help and support each other to do the same.”

Weight loss Consultant Elaine Lamb  organised the event and says she is proud of every member that took part.

“We had windy weather and although we lost the gazebo before our walk started and in true North Yorkshire Slimming World-style our members, their friends and families were out in force to support each other.

“They showed just what can be done when we come together – both in terms of achieving something amazing and raising money for a great cause too.”
