Young performers at Risedale School have been praised after staging a two-night production inspired by one of William Shakespeare’s best-known comedies.
The school’s Drama Club transformed the hall into an enchanted woodland for “Magic & Mischief”, a family-friendly production based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was performed on Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24.
The fast-paced comedy followed a group of characters who accidentally unleashed magical chaos before discovering that teamwork and friendship were the key to putting things right.
Drama Club director Ms Dunphy praised the commitment of the pupils involved in the production.
She said: “Our pupils have poured their hearts, souls, and a little bit of theatrical wizardry into this production. From the incredible set designs to the brilliant comedic timing of our cast, Magic & Mischief showcases the creativity thriving here at Risedale.”
Headteacher Mrs Greenwood also praised the cast and crew, saying the production reflected the school’s values.
“This was a thoroughly enjoyable production, and the cast were brilliant – they brought such energy to their characters,” she said.
“I know first-hand what joy, confidence and excitement school productions bring to performers and audience members alike. Seeing our school values of resilience and relationships shine through so brightly on stage has been wonderful.”
The production was supported by pupils working behind the scenes on lighting, sound and scenery, while three cake sales helped raise money for props and scripts.
Year 11 pupil Charlotte Swift also returned to school the day after her official leavers’ day to help paint the stage sets.
Audience members were able to enjoy refreshments and take part in a raffle during the interval, with proceeds going towards supporting the school’s drama department.
Risedale School said the Drama Club aims to develop pupils’ creativity, confidence and teamwork by providing opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes.
The school thanked Ms Dunphy, Mrs Southworth-Gedye, the cast and crew, staff volunteers and members of the local community who supported the performances.
