A sliproad at Scotch Corner is having to be resurfaced today following a spillage of offal.
The two lanes of the northbound junction off the A1(M) have been closed while the resurfacing work takes place.
Highways England said its staff worked through the night to clean up the spillage.
However, it was decided the road was too dangerous to be reopened and the only option was to resurface the carriageway.
A Highways England spokesperson said: “We have two lanes closed on the northbound exit slip road due to an offal spill.
“We have worked throughout the night to try and clean this up but the road remains slippery and not safe to travel on.
“Our only option now is to resurface the area which we are organising as soon as possible.”
The agency said anyone heading to Cumbria and the Lake District today should plan ahead as the lane closures were likely to be in place for most of the day.
“If you know which vehicle lost the load, pls let us know,” the spokesperson added.
At least you have the guts to tell people. You're all heart… and lungs, brains and other animal byproducts!
