The A66 trans-Penine road has reopened after being closed this morning because of snow, breakdowns and an accident.
Several inches of snow have fallen across the district making dangerous conditions for motorists.
The snow and ice caused particular problems in Richmond, with traffic struggling to navigate the hills in the town centre.
