The Royal Lancers will march through the streets of Richmond on Saturday as they formally exercise the Freedom of the Town.
The ceremonial parade, which begins at 1pm, follows the recent granting of the Freedom of Richmond to the Regiment and will celebrate the long-standing relationship between the town, Catterick Garrison and the Armed Forces.
Soldiers will form up at Nuns Close Car Park before marching through the town centre, travelling along Victoria Road and King Street before passing through the Market Place and concluding at Richmond Castle.
The Freedom of the Town grants a regiment the historic privilege of marching through the town “with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed” – a tradition dating back centuries and symbolising the trust and respect between a community and the Armed Forces.
The event is expected to attract residents, visitors, veterans and military families from across the region, providing an opportunity to show support for the Regiment and mark a significant moment in Richmond’s history.
The Royal Lancers have strong ties to Catterick Garrison and regularly take part in military and community events across North Yorkshire.
Organisers are encouraging members of the public to line the parade route and help create a memorable welcome for the soldiers as they exercise their newly granted freedom.
The parade route will begin at Nuns Close Car Park before proceeding along Victoria Road, King Street and through the Market Place, finishing at Richmond Castle.
Temporary road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place along the route while the parade takes place, and motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through the town on Saturday afternoon.
Residents and visitors are invited to gather along the route ahead of the 1pm start and join in celebrating what organisers have described as a proud and historic occasion for both the Regiment and the town.
