A national campaign focusing on safe cycling is being backed by Safer Richmondshire.
This week’s National Road Safety Week – supported by Brake – raises awareness of the importance of safe driving and riding behaviours.
For 2018 the focus of the campaign is on cyclists – people on two wheels are among the most vulnerable road users in the UK with more than a third of people killed or seriously injured on UK roads bicycle or motor cycle riders.
Safer Richmondshire, the Community Safety Hub supported by Richmondshire District Council, is working with North Yorkshire Police and students from Richmond Sixth Form by raising awareness through various activities throughout the school.
A banner has been placed outside the school to warn drivers of the dangers and promote the campaign.
Community safety group chairman, Councillor Ian Threlfall actively supports the work of the Safer Richmondshire Hub in raising awareness of community safety issues within the local community.
“Cycling requires a combination of skills, confidence and awareness,” he said.
“You need to keep safe, not take unnecessary risks and use common sense.
“We urge that anyone setting out on their own lets someone know where they are going and when they will be back; and takes a mobile phone with them.
“Bright reflective clothing should be worn and they should never ride at night without lights. And importantly they should always be aware of what is happening around them and try to anticipate what other road users and pedestrians might do.”
