Police say their has been a safe resolution to an incident at Scotch Corner.
It is understood a person was on a bridge and it was feared they would jump or fall onto the motorway below.
The A1 was shut in both directions while police dealt with the incident.
However, police said at around 7pm that the road had reopened.
The incident caused heavy traffic and delays on a number of roads in the district, including through Richmond, as traffic backed up on the motorway and motorists tried to get around the closure.
The A1(M) is now OPEN in both direction after colleagues have brought a safe end to an incident. https://t.co/hFlSU5OF0A
